Surface Design Final

For my final I wanted a garment that overpowered. So I made a really high collared bodice with a long skirt. I carved out a leaf out of a sponge and used textile paints to make the abstract print on the outfit. To show sex appeal I left the sides of skirt open and closed it to hip with a fagoting stitch.

Cell Cycle By: Nervous System
Product Design Company founded in 2007 by Jessica Rosenkrantz and Jesse Louis-Rosenberg.
Cell Cycle is a line of 3D printed nylon and stainless steel jewelry.
"The pieces are 3D printing in nylon (polyamide) using a process called Selective Laser Sintering (SLS). The process “grows” the pieces in layers by laying down a thin coat of powdered material and fusing together the solid regions with a laser. The technology is quite interesting as it allows you directly translate a digital file into a physical object. SLS is an especially versatile method because there are almost no limitations on form, and you get a solid plastic part. The nylon material is strong and flexible, not brittle, so it can withstand regular use. 3D printing is still a quite expensive process and part of our design idea was to create a form that could be made and sold at an affordable price point. The cellular nature of our designs creates rigid forms that enclose a large amount of space but use only a small amount of material. By minimizing the material usage, we would able to minimize the manufacturing costs of these pieces and bring 3D printed products to the masses."

Week 2: Surface Design Entry

Suno
Shirred Skirt V-Neck Dress
$795
"For their Pre-Spring 2016 collection, Suno embodies modern folk, where unexpected structure gives a sophisticated touch. From beautiful silk culottes to eyelet tops and dresses, this season’s items manage to keep the earthy folk feel while at the same time elevating the clothes to a more urban field."
Acne Studios
Clemente Print Dress
$850
"Postmodernism through the lens of a Cubist landscape, Acne Studios' Pre-Spring 2016 collection feels more like a critical theory crash course than breezy resort wear. Thoughtfully crafted patchwork silhouettes counter prismatic graphic contrasts with a twist of '90s teen angst. "
Orange Circles
Julie B. Booth used a battery to print on fabric. Neat way to think outside the box.

How to Print Fabric Using Sublimation
I stumbled upon this cool video of a girl using sublimation to transfer a splattered watercolor motif onto 100% polyester fabric. Sublimation is a method of transferring ink dyes to fabric using a heat press and pressure. Almost the same as iron on printing.

"For me fashion is an expression of art that is very close related to me and to my body. I see it as my expression of identity combined with desire, moods and cultural setting."
"A mix of ready-to-wear and couture pieces is presented with artist Lawrence Malstaf -who specializes in the interaction between biology and physicality.Models float in the air, embryonic, seemingly weightless and in a meditative suspended animation."
